Do I need to know how to make music?
Yes.
I ask that participants be intermediate level music makers. What I mean is that you simply know how to use your equipment and are capable of recording out your ideas. That doesn’t mean that you need to have an album out yet or have 20K followers on Instagram. I just need you to know how to make music…however you define that. Feel free to reach out to me if you are a beginner and want to take one-on-one lessons.
Is this a music instruction course?
No.
Sound Practice is geared towards helping you discover who you are and what your story is as a music maker. By the end of this course, I don’t want you to sound like everyone else. I want you to be well on your way to sounding like YOU. And if you don’t know that means right now, that’s perfect! That’s what we’re going to uncover together.
Can I sign someone else up?
Of course.
Absolutely, but just make sure you put them in contact with me so that I can level set what this course is and is not.
Do I have to attend every course?
Yes.
Sound Practice is a cohort learning experience, so if one person is missing, it will impact the entire community. Plus, we will have some special guests that you are not going to want to miss!
How do I apply for a scholarship if I identify as a Black Music Creator?
Cohort 5, starting May 16th, 2022, is reserved for Black Music Creators. Women, non-binary and trans music makers are especially encouraged to apply. Let me know what it would mean to you to be selected, what you feel that you would get from attending the course and what you would bring to this community through this questionnaire.
You must commit to all classroom dates!
This course is a labor of love, but still a labor to produce and deliver. It’s not fair to other applicants if you are selected and do not take this opportunity seriously to fully show up. It is also not respectful of other participants. Please carefully consider before you apply for a seat.
By taking on a spot, that means that there is one less seat given to someone else.
Scholarships will be announced Monday, April 25th
How do I contribute to the scholarship fund?
I welcome contributions of all sizes and humbly thank you in advance. Whether they are as small as $5.00 or as large as a full seat (or more) contributions made to the Black Music Creator’s scholarship will have a massive impact; both on the lives of participants and the Sound Practice program. Donations can be accepted via Venmo (@Malik-Abdul-Rahmaan) and PayPal (malik.abdulrahmaan@gmail.com).
Do I need to purchase any equipment?
No.
My only request is that you ensure that your setup is fully functional and ready to roll prior to the start of class. There WILL be course work to complete between class dates.
What can I expect the format of each class to look like?
2.5 hours of classroom instruction via Zoom every week. The course is a combination of group work, lecture, multimedia, and discussion.
Will there be homework?
